The other part of the meeting!

The other part of my meeting to day involved Axel. There are only a couple of other kids who have ever come back to Serbia after their adoption. Axel is the first with Down syndrome to ever come back.

Of course, everyone who knew him three years ago was shocked at how much Axel has grown. Many commented on how grown up and mature he is now. About 1/2 way through the meeting all of a sudden Axel said "Hi!" to the foster mom. Like he suddenly realized "Hey! Now I know where I know you from!" We were there three hours and Axel sat the entire time, looking at a magazine, playing with cards, and drinking his juice.

Interestingly, during one part of the meeting I asked a question. In Serbian they asked if I could please clarify the question. AXEL answered!!! Not in words, but in sign, giving an example of something Asher does. It was very clear he understood their Serbian question! Axel never ceases to amaze me.

  1. Wow!!! 3 years later he remembers and understands Serbian. That is just beyond amazing.

  2. The funniest part to me...doesn't Axel usually act like he isn't fluent in sign (at least at home)? I guess he was so engrossed that he forgot. :)

  3. Wow, I'm covered in goose bumps! I wondered how he will react if he meet them and if he will think he have to go back!? I'm so glad he was relaxed. Axel really has come such a long way! Will you also see his birth parents? I wonder how he will react meeting Audley, because this time he will be around if she has behaviour patterns that you have to brake before you return. One of the boys in Kallen's school rides with us to school. He is slow,, very very slow and I'm always reminded of Axel when he does that.
